    Summary

    This grant program seeks to provide local educational agencies (LEAs) eligible for Title II, A funding with an opportunity to build strong campus leaders through principal residencies. LEAs that are awarded this grant will have the opportunity to identify strong principal candidates from among their current staff, partner with an effective principal preparation program that provides training focused on best practices in campus leadership, including a concentrated focus in instructional leadership, and offer those candidates authentic campus-based leadership experiences throughout their residency year. This grant seeks to help support internal leadership pipelines within an LEA for existing staff. It is very likely that residents would be classroom teachers who have demonstrated instructional success and strong leadership potential and would remain classroom teachers during their resident year experience.

    Residency programs must, for at least one academic year, provide prospective principals or other school leaders:
    • Sustained and rigorous clinical learning in an authentic school setting;
    • Evidence-based coursework, to the extent the State determines in consultation with LEAs that evidence is reasonably available;
    • Ongoing support from an effective mentor principal or school leader;
    • Substantial leadership responsibilities; and
    • An opportunity to practice and be evaluated in a school setting.
